The Royal Bahamas Police Force has launched a formal inquiry into the death of a 36-year-old British woman who was killed on Tuesday while attempting to save her two sons from a strong ocean current. The incident occurred during a family snorkeling excursion near the southern tip of North Bimini.
Police officials stated that the woman was in the water with her husband and their two children when a powerful current swept both boys away. In an effort to reach the children, the mother was also pulled from the group. The two boys were eventually recovered from the water and are safe, but the woman was found unresponsive.
A preliminary account released on social media by the force details the timeline of the emergency. Officers at the Alice Town police station received a report shortly after 10:00 am local time regarding a woman who was unresponsive at the North Bimini ferry dock. Upon arrival at the scene, responders found that the woman had already been transported to a local clinic for immediate medical care.
Despite efforts by medical staff to save her life, a local doctor pronounced the woman dead at the facility. Authorities noted that she was pulled from the water and brought to the ferry dock, where cardiopulmonary resuscitation was administered before her transfer to the clinic. The police statement explicitly noted that foul play is not suspected in the incident.
An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the precise medical cause of death. The investigation aims to establish the specific circumstances surrounding the event, although the initial report suggests the strong current was the primary factor in the tragedy.
The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has confirmed its awareness of the case. A spokesperson for the department expressed its condolences to the family, stating that its thoughts are with the relatives of the British woman. The office added that officials are currently in contact with local Bahamian authorities and are providing consular support to the family during this difficult time.
North Bimini is part of a small island group situated between Andros, the largest landmass in the Bahamas, and Miami in the United States. These islands serve as the closest point in the Bahamian archipelago to the US mainland. The area is internationally recognized for its historical connection to writer Ernest Hemingway, who once resided there, and for hosting a prominent shark research center.
